What size sand do I need for a specific well screen slot-size?
The general rule of thumb is to select a sand size which will have about 10% passing through the well screen slot openings. The slot size is determined by examining and analyzing the cuttings recovered from the borehole. A slot size is then selected which allows water to freely enter the well while holding back the majority of the aquifer material. If the slot size is too large or the sand is too small, sand will pass through the screen along with the water, go through the pump and enter the distribution lines.
What test methods are available to determine the quality of water filtration sands?
The most common test methods for this are found in the AWWWA B100 Standard. The high quality sand that we have available at our Bakersfield and Brady operations meet and exceed this quality standard.
Do you sell filtration media other than silica sand?
Yes, we have relationships with other filtration media producers, therefore, upon request, Pioneer Sands can offer support gravel, anthracite, and garnet, along with our high quality filtration sands.
What is the advantage of using a high-silica and rounded sand in constructing a water well?
A high-silica sand is resistant to the effects of acid well rehabilitation treatments. Since silica is inert it will not impart and adverse impacts on the quality of your well water. Rounded sand grains provide the highest porosity and permeability, are less likely to compact during well development and will also allow the well development procedure to be as effective as possible.
Can you tell me how much sand I need to gravel pack my water well?
For our customers convenience, we have an interactive gravel pack volume calculator on our website here.
